Convenience fee a rip off

I paid the property taxes yesterday and had every intention of doing so online. I read the insert which said, why pay for postage and envelopes? Pay online. What it didn't say was save money by not using a stamp or envelope! It's all in the wording because I thought it would save me 39 cents, when actually it was going to cost $50 for a convenience fee!!! I sure hope only people who had no other choice used the pay online system. Maybe then they will make it more cost friendly to use. Who pays $50 for a convenience fee? That is hardly convenient. Writing a check, using an envelope and putting on a stamp is not so obsolete that I would pay that kind of fee on an already hefty amount due to the county. Perhaps I should write a letter to the editor of the local paper. I think it is wrong to charge us for something that doesn't cost them much. No employees necessary to open envelopes or manually remove checks and post to the appropriate accounts. It is done automatically via payment online. Maybe that is the problem, they don't want to loose employees to technology.

My rant for the day.

i'd shoot them a little letter telling them where to cram their 50 bones conveniance fee....lame-o

My husband ran into something similar to this the other day when he was renewing his tabs, in washington u have to get a new liscence plate ever 8 years or something like that....He was paying on line and it asked him where he wanted to ship it from (he figured to save money on shipping) So he picked the Smokey Point location which is literally less then a mile from our house....It would cost an extra 35 dollars to ship from smokey point...whereas it was already built into the price to get it shipped from everett.....45 minutes away...so he had it shipped from there. It seems like they try and get you at every turn eh?

I could see it if it were a fee for paying late, but not early or by due date!

Alan's right. The mortgage companies often charge a fee for last minute payments. You don't have to incur a late fee, but you have to pay for them posting it instantly. It's still a rip-off but at least you get something for your fee.

While it isn't free to develop and maintain a website and take on-line payments, they do get the money faster when you pay on line. So the fee is a convenience for them and a major cost for you! Gotta read that small print.

Sheesh..what a rip off, indeed!

I buy postage stamps thru the mail ( saves time instead of trying to get to the post office if we run out, etc...). I once went online to buy a book of stamps, and they wanted $1.00 to send it, where as thru the mail, it is free. So I saved myself a buck and did it thru the mail instead! LOL Go figure!
